Newsletter – 4th January 2026

Alastair Thom writes: Putting behind and looking forward. The new year is busy with anticipation of things to come. Some of us will have high hopes, others perhaps high anxiety. But as well as the looking forward there is also a necessary letting go. We cannot retrieve the past but it can nag at us and drag us down – the mistakes, regrets and might-have-beens that follow us from 2025. St.Paul, who had quite a lot to regret in his own past has a straightforward and realistic approach to those parts of his own history which cannot be changed – ‘Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 3). It’s not that he doesn’t care about the past, it’s that it can’t be undone and so needs to be let go of. And the image of looking forward to the prize, which is nothing less than being with Jesus, is one to hold onto through all that 2026 has in store for us.
