St Luke’s GoesGreen
In Lent 2021, we spent time reflecting, using a resource from Tearfund and A Rocha about the climate crisis as a poverty issue. This was the start of moving from reflections to actions. We understand climate justice at St Luke’s as rooted in loving and caring for the whole world, and all its inhabitants, human and otherwise. We aim to continually discern what we as a community can do through learning, sharing, liturgy and action. We are pleased that in July this year (2024) we were awarded a Silver Eco Church Award from A Rocha UK in recognition of our efforts to care for God’s earth in our worship and teaching; management of buildings and land; community and global engagement; and lifestyle.
In considering the challenges set out by Eco Church audit we have taken a number of actions, including :-
● identifying energy saving as a priority – we lagged heating pipes, overhauled all windows to improve closing, draught proofed exterior doors, replaced bulbs with LED bulbs, and renewed old light fittings with LED lighting, installed programmable timers;
● registering as a Fairtrade Church
● Agreeing an Environmental Policy which affects every aspect of our daily church life ranging from deciding what tea, coffee and sugar we buy (we are a Fairtrade church and committed to buying Fairtrade products); to a commitment to reducing the plastic items and disposables items that we buy and use; and to a commitment to using recognised sustainable standards when undertaking building work.
We produce a quarterly Newsletter (see in the drop down menu) please check that out for uptodate information. And please take a look at our Environmental Policy, updated in July 2024If you would like to contact one of the Environmental Working Group please send an email to stlukesgoesgreen21@gmail.com
